Social Media Update

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably noticed I haven’t been very active lately. This is partly due to being busy, but it’s also a conscious decision. As good as Twitter is for connecting with people and keeping up with friends, I have grown to dislike intensely Twitter politics. Not just the political politics, but Twitter’s own politics. Christians and conservatives should not have to feel like they are walking on eggshells to talk about things that matter to them. And yes, all political voices should be treated equally in a social space. Even if you don’t like what they say and think they are peddling lies. That’s for you to decide, not Twitter.

I haven’t closed my Twitter account, but I am taking a long break from it. Maybe sometime in the future, it will truly be a place for civil discourse without Jack Dorsey and his minions editorializing content. Until then, you can find me on Parler.

“Wait,” you may say, “Isn’t Parler just a right-wing echo chamber?” There was certainly a danger of this a while ago as conservatives started leaving Twitter and Facebook. But I’ve noticed some folks from what I would call the center-left joining. And I hope more people with different perspectives join. Parler has a basic set of house rules, but aside from those, you are free to express your thoughts. No editorializing. No selling of your data.

As for Facebook, I was never really active there anyway, so my absence is no big deal. I am looking at MeWe as an alternative, however. MeWe aspires to be what Facebook ought to be: a place where you can talk, socialize, find friend groups, and so on without fear of your data being sold or you being silenced.

I also realize that I haven’t been giving this blog as much attention as I ought of late. Don’t worry, I’m not abandoning the blog. In fact, next June will be the blog’s 10th birthday. As time permits I will continue to post here. Be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss anything!

So that’s where I am at the moment. Here’s where you can find me on Parler and MeWe. I will update the sidebar links shortly:

Parler: https://parler.com/profile/colindsmith/posts

MeWe: https://mewe.com/i/colinsmith49

I hope to see you there! 😁

Any questions?

I have not heard of either MeWe or Parler! Like you, I am hardly ever on Twitter anymore (for the same reasons) and I’m only on FB to join the Shark-support group πŸ˜‰ I do use Instagram though I avoid the selfie crowd like the plague. I post nature and art type photos and tend to follow exactly the same. Although they are starting to make changes to Instagram, so if it starts to head down the path of the others I will likely abandon it as well. Luckily I love my blog, so I hide there most of the time these days.

Thankfully a number of alternative social media sites have sprung up, such as Rumble (alternative to YouTube), Parler, MeWe, WT Social, Yubo, Sociall, Mastodon, etc. I can’t vouch for all of them, but they seem to be based on principles of free speech and not selling users’ data. I’m sure there’s an Instagram alternative if things get intolerable there.

But like you, I’ll be keeping my blog so if all else fails I still have a little voice on the internet somewhere. πŸ™‚
