Kale

Today is Day Eleven of the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge. Click on the letter picture to the right for more information about this blog hop. Like last year, I’m writing 100-word flash fiction stories/poems/scenes for this year’s challenge. Today’s is:

Kale

Emmie gave the pot a few more stirs then hovered over the top allowing the rising aroma to envelope her face. She breathed deeply, discerning the slightest off note in her finely tuned symphony.

“Needs more…” She scanned the kitchen.

“Hello, Granny!” said Elmira. “Is it ready?”

“Pass me the kale,” Emmie said, pointing to the leaves on the counter. Elmira grimaced, handling them gingerly. Her grandmother snatched the kale from her hands and dropped it in the pot.

“Ha, ha!” she cackled. “A teaspoon of this in Tommy’s soda, my child, and you’ll be his Prom Queen by lunchtime!”

  3. Kale is something I’ve never had a taste for… So making it evil is not a bad idea.

I knew the kale-haters would love this one… 😉 Tomorrow’s story will appeal to a similar group of people well-known to readers of Janet Reid’s blog… 🙂

  4. Ewwwwww, Kale today, and our favorite L-bean tomorrow ???
Colin are you harvesting this stuff on Carkoon or smoking it ?

    • cds says:

Kale is the wonder plant on Carkoon. Eat it, smoke it, wear it–you’d be amazed what Carkoonians can do with it… 🙂

      As for tomorrow’s… hehehehe… wait and see… 😀

  5. Aww, give kale a chance. It’s great in the right recipe, if you massage it enough.

    • cds says:

Personally, I have no problem with kale. You massage it?

      • LOL . Yes, if you want to eat it raw you must massage it first. You drizzle a little oil on it and massage it. It helps break it down a bit and makes it more manageable to chew. The massaging is kind of like a pre-chew. Sounds weird now that I’ve written it out, but yes, it’s recommended.

I ate kale soup once. It had a bit too much kale but when I removed about half of it, it was “tolerable.”

Kale soup. Interesting. I think I’ve only seen/had kale as plate dressing, never as a main ingredient. It’s possible I’ve had it as part of a salad. Never a soup though.
